This wonderful latin instrument is a smaller version (1/3 of the size) of the professional guiro - about 7" long. It consists of a hollowed-out tube of wood with ridges and a scraping stick. To play, you rub the stick against the ridges, and it creates a charming scraping noise that is central to many latin styles, including mambo. In the hands of a skillful player, this instrument is the backbone of latin music.
